The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has introduced the SMS Sender ID Register, a new industry initiative designed to reduce SMS scams by requiring businesses to register text-based sender labels before use. This article explains what the Register is, whether it applies to you, and what — if anything — you need to do as a MediRecords customer.

What is the SMS Sender ID Register?
A Sender ID is a text label that appears as the sender name on an SMS message instead of a phone number. Examples include BRANDNAME, BRAND-SALE, or a clear abbreviation of a business name or trade mark. Under the new ACMA Register, any business wishing to send SMS messages using a text-based Sender ID must register that label before use.
The goal of the Register is to protect Australians from SMS scams by ensuring that named sender labels are verified and linked to a legitimate, registered organisation.
Does This Apply to MediRecords Customers?
The SMS Sender ID Register does not apply to MediRecords customers using the MediRecords SMS services.
MediRecords sends SMS messages using a mobile number display — that is, messages are sent from a phone number rather than a named text label. Under the ACMA framework, only text-based Sender IDs (business names in place of a number) are subject to the Register. Messages that originate from a phone number are explicitly unaffected and can continue as normal.
No Action Required
If you are using MediRecords SMS services, you do not need to take any action in relation to the ACMA SMS Sender ID Register. There is nothing to register, no forms to complete, and no changes to your MediRecords configuration.
MediRecords will continue to monitor any developments related to this initiative and will notify customers if anything changes that may affect them.
