The Google Chrome browser uses its own, in-built print service for printing, which has been simplified for ease of use.
The Chrome browser's print service does have access to all the printers you have installed locally and, on your network, however, it does not have access to the advanced configuration options of these printers. Because of this limitation, you cannot select a custom print tray, and the page will always print on whatever tray is the printer's "Default Tray".
When you print a page in Chrome, five print settings may affect your print job.
- Destination (where the page will be printed)
- Layout (the orientation of the page)
- Colour
- Paper size
- Background graphics (required for printing Investigations Requests and logos on letters)
If you want to select a specific tray for your print job, for example, to print on prescription paper, click Print using the system dialogue...
Using the system dialogue (the operating system's print service) to print, means that when printing from the Chrome browser, you will have access to all the printers you have installed locally and, on your network, as well as access to a limited number of advanced configuration options for these printers.
When the system dialogue opens, click Preferences to open the advanced print configuration options.
The configuration options, and how they are displayed, will vary depending on your brand of printer and what printing software you have installed. However, the most commonly used settings usually relate to Colour, Layout/Orientation and selecting a Printer Tray, all of which are usually available in this configuration menu.
The exact location of each of these configuration options is once again dependent on the brand of your printer.
It is also worth keeping in mind that the Chrome browser saves the print settings of the last page printed. This means that if you changed the Layout or Paper size the last time you printed, the next print job will also print with those settings.
If you regularly change your print settings when you print in the Chrome browser, then you should make a habit of quickly checking these settings before you click Print.
